Pigheaded & Pignorant?

No such thing as a "Teacup" pig

You will never eat bacon again!  It’s just not possible once you’ve met with the wonderful pigs of Best Friends Piggy Paradise. For instance, did you know pigs are actually very clean animals?  And scientific testing shows that they are as intelligent as dogs.  There are many misconceptions out there about pigs, so learning the truth about these curious creatures at Best Friends has been fascinating. Here’s a few surprising facts:

1.  There is no such thing as a teacup pig.  This has been a fad made famous by celebrities, but it is misnomer as pigs do not stay tiny.  There is no pig breed that stays small, and the name teacup is just a euphemism by breeders to get people to buy the baby piglets.  Breeders fool people by breeding very young pigs (less than 1 year) and tell gullible buyers that the babies will not get any larger than the parents.  (It takes 3-4 years for pigs to become full grown.)

2.  Pet pigs are like cats in terms of hygiene – they are super clean animals.  Outside, they will create their own bathroom area far from their living quarters, and use it religiously.  And like your furry felines, they too enjoy sleeping in the beds of their human companions.

3.  Since they are intelligent animals, they like intellectual stimulation.  Pigs rank #4 in animal intelligence behind chimpanzees, dolphins and elephants.

4.  Pigs are artistic!  BF has a painting program and if you’d like, you can request a specific pig artist, your color palette, and size of canvas!  Just email Yvonne at BF at YvonneM@bestfriends.org.

I’ll be working with the pigs in Piggy Paradise later this week, so stay tuned for tales about these cutie pies.

P.S.  Sleepovers are available with the pigs too!

Allie and Aloe Update: Doing Great!

Allie and Aloe, the two African Grey Parrots that made the trip to Best Friends with me, are healthy and doing well.  They’re staying at a private residence in Kanab for a 6 week ‘quarantine’ period.  Apparently parrot diseases are highly contagious, so this is just a precaution for the rest of the birds at Feathered Friends.

Reiki with the Special Cats of Kitty Hotel?

Every building at Best Friends Cat World has a few cats living in the lobby. These feline ambassadors greeted me when I visited Kitty Hotel today.

Montana

  • Thumper is a beautiful  black cat whose back end and back legs are paralyzed, but he can scoot himself around quite quickly with his front legs when he wants to.
  • Duke is another handsome black cat.  He has cerebellar hypoplasia, a neurological disorder that affects his coordination, so he lives in his padded pad!
  •  Montana is a stunningly gorgeous Manx with a birth defect caused by her breeding. (Manx are bred to have a spinal mutation that keeps their tails short.  People probably don’t realize what can happen when this breeding goes wrong, even by  “responsible breeders”.)  Montana’s back legs and back end don’t work.  She pulls herself around with her front legs, but can’t use the litter box.  Twice a day, the staff of Kitty World give her lower half a bath to keep her clean.

When I met these cats and learned of their conditions,  I thought it would be so sad to work with them.  I thought, I  should offer them Reiki because of their physical disabilities.  Boy was I wrong.

These three beauties and the others I met don’t know they’re special needs cats, they just know they’re special.  Like any cat!  They have a great quality of life and enjoy all the attention they get from volunteers, visitors and staff.

The joy that radiated from the lobby of Kitty Hotel was remarkable.  Just the presence of these unique and happy individuals brightened my day and I forgot all about “giving” them Reiki.  Instead I just enjoyed playing with them and adoring them in the fashion they’ve become accustomed to.

I was convinced again today that this is the happiest place on earth.  Life is respected, in all its forms.  The animals are treated well for the duration of their natural lives, regardless of conditions such as  FeLV,  FIV,  or physical conditions like paralysis.  (In fact, there’s a whole building of FIV cats.)

The compassionate philosophy of Best Friends creates an undeniably good energy.  It’s ubiquitious among the residents and caretakers alike. And it’s contagious.  The cats were living examples of being Reiki in daily life regardless of circumstances.  When we are committed to our daily practice, we too can bring that kind of energy into our daily lives.  It was quite the lesson for me.  I don’t have to wait until I have a different job or relationship, or until I lose 20 pounds.  I can choose to be Reiki right now, in every moment.  God I love cats :-)

The Happiest Place on Earth

The Happiest Place on earth is not Disneyland.  It’s the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, UT.

If you’ve not been here, it’s hard to imagine just how fabulous it is.  It’s not like any other animal shelter or sanctuary you’ve visited.  Maybe you’ve been to a lot of animal shelters, but this place is unique.  Unique = one of a kind.  Really.

There are a lot of superlatives to describe it.  It’s the largest no-kill animal sanctuary in the country (population-wise).  It’s the biggest domestic animal sanctuary in the country (3800 acres).  It’s in the most gorgeous setting of any animal sanctuary in the country (see previous post on incredible views).  And it’s ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

It is designed with the animals’ comfort and emotional needs in mind.

Kitty Hotel of Cat World

Take Cat World for instance. There are 10 buildings in the Cat World that house  a total of about 500 cats at any given time.  (FIVE HUNDRED CATS – I’m in heaven!) Each building has indoor/outdoor facilities where the cats live in groups and no cat is kenneled, not even the ones with special needs.  There are “doggie doors” so the cats can choose when to go outside and when to stay in.  The outdoor porch areas are completely enclosed, and both indoor and outdoor areas feature cubby holes and high perches.

Every animal is an individual that has individual needs and preferences.  What a concept!  Click here for a glimpse at how really special this sanctuary is:  Cat World Brief Video .

The Parrots Survive the Drive

Allie and Aloe, the two African Grey Parrots I transported to Best Friends, not only survived the drive, they did great!  They were more quiet than expected.  When I was bored, I would talk to them and they would chatter back at me.   They’ll soon be enjoying their new home at Best Friends’ Parrot Garden.

Best Friends: Incredible Views

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is located in “The Golden Circle”, smack dab in the center of great park and recreation areas – the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon & Zion National Parks and Lake Powell.

Kanab UT

About a 10 hour drive from Denver, it offers incredible views of natural beauty:  coral pink cliffs and sand dunes, volcanic craters,  deep canyons, petroglyphs, unique mutli-colored spires, and of course, majestic mountains. I was almost regretting that I would be volunteering and taking classes all week at Best Friends, instead of being outdoors amidst this amazing landscape.

Escalante Grand Staircase

Escalante Grand Staircase

So I was pleasantly surprised on my first day at Best Friends — there are fantastic views from many locations within the sanctuary  (More about that, along with photos,  in future posts.)  Kanab is the town that’s closest to Best Friends.  Luckily there is wireless internet available in many local establishments, because there’s not a lot else to do here once the sanctuary closes to volunteers at 4 p.m.!

First Stop on the Best Friends Adventure

Allie, Aloe and Pahilli

I met up with the two African Grey Parrots early in the morning, and sat with them for about a half hour to offer them Reiki (before starting on our long adventure to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in southwestern Utah).  Their human companion, Affifa, had excused herself and gone upstairs to get ready for work.  Affifa also had a Senegalese Parrot, and among the 3 birds, it was quite noisy!  It took me a little extra time to get into that quiet place  in order to be open to the energy and create that space where the birds could receive what they needed and wanted from the Reiki.

I was surprised that within minutes I began to feel such a tremendously heavy, grieving energy.  How could the two parrots know that a 10 hour drive to a new and unknown home was ahead of them?  Was it their past that was being healed?  Both birds were about 20 years old and the male, Aloe, had been a lab bird.  The female, Allie (or “Allie girl” as Aloe cutely  called her), was friendlier and not as emotionally damaged by her past.  The two were like an old married couple, squawking at each other, yet quite comfortable and inseparable.  Within minutes of beginning the session, the birds had settled down and were quiet.  The treatment continued for another 20 minutes or so, with that feeling of heartache present the entire time.

Affifa saying goodbye to Aloe

At one point, I heard some slight noises, and opened my eyes to see that a big beautiful black cat had entered the room.  I closed my eyes and continued the treatment.  Within a few minutes, the sadness lifted and it seemed time to conclude the treatment.  I ended by thanking the birds for allowing me to share the Reiki space with them.  When I opened my eyes and looked around the room to locate the gorgeous cat, I was surprised to see it was on Affifa’s lap!  She had been quietly sitting on the couch behind me and the birds the whole time.  Now the grieving feeling made sense to me — Affifa had been receiving Reiki energy for her own healing regarding the surrender of the birds.

She then shared with me the story of the two Greys, and how she and her husband had adopted them when he was diagnosed with cancer two years ago.  As soon as they were adopted, her husband’s cancer moved to his brain so he never got to know the two birds.  He passed away shortly after that, so the birds had been a link to her husband’s memory.  For practical reasons, she needed to surrender the birds.  But it seemed that she was emotionally ready to release that grief that she’d been holding in connection with the birds and her husband’s passing.

Like many creatures, cats are extraordinary healers.  Just being in their presence can be healing.  So it was no surprise to me Affifa’s grief seemed to dissipated when Sheba the cat jumped up on her lap!  I’m looking forward to many hours next week with cats and other healing animals.

Sanctuary Adventures: Best Friends or Bust!

I leave early tomorrow for  Best Friends Animal Sanctuary for two weeks of volunteering, Reiki, and workshops.   I received a request today to transport two African Grey Parrots from Denver back to the Sanctuary. Apparently, these two parrots especially like to sing along with the Barney song.   Should be a fun-filled and chatty 10 hour drive!

African Grey Parrots

The only thing I know about Greys is from the book Alex & Me: How a Scientist and a Parrot Discovered a Hidden World of Animal Intelligence–and Formed a Deep Bond in the Process by Irene M. Pepperberg.  Will be fun and interesting to offer these intelligent birds Reiki before the drive.  I’ll be blogging regularly so tune in to read about my adventures!

P.S.  Put in your order now if you’d like me to transport a Grey, or any other animals back here to Denver so they can join your family!  Spread out over 3700 acres in beautiful southeastern Utah (near Bryce and Zion National Parks), they have over 1700 animals: dogs, kitties, bunnies, birds, pigs, horses and more. Until they find their forever home, they’re safe at the BFAS, a no-kill shelter.

Reiki in the Wild: An Ostrich Rescue

Lions, giant tortoises, herds of wildebeest, eland, kudu & zebra as well as parades of elephants roam the dusty, semi-arid landscape of Addo National Elephant Park. Just an hour east of the coastal town of Port Elizabeth in the southeastern part of South Africa, it seems an unlikely place for any species to thrive. Indeed, it’s the home to the endangered dung beetle. During my visit I didn’t think to offer Reiki to the beetles, but I did have an opportunity to offer Reiki to one animal in need.

Throughout the Park are posted signs along the paved roads advising – “Do Not Leave Your Vehicle”. While there is one prey species that live in the Park (lions), the rule of not exiting your vehicle is more a case of respecting the wildlife in their home, not necessarily for your own safety. They are used to seeing cars and smelling exhaust, but these are wild animals that have not had encounters with our species. The Park isn’t a zoo or even game reserve – it’s the native habitat for animals that live there. We just happened to have a nice view via the network of paved roads through the Park.

What are they doing?

What are they doing?!

So we were shocked early one morning when we saw three people standing in a wide open desolate area, with not even a shrub nearby. Surely they were Park Rangers we thought from a distance. But as we pulled closer, we saw that these people were not in the green Park Ranger uniform. And there were several parked vehicles in the nearby parking area that was marked as a “viewing site”. The people were splattered with mud and were huddled together talking to each other.

We pulled over and got out the binoculars to get a closer look. They went into action bending over and trying to work at something. They stood up to confer again. Now we could see the long neck of an ostrich, the only part of bird visible. The rest of her body was buried in a mud hole. Again they tried to get traction in the mud as they gripped the ostrich from underneath each giant wing, and it looked like they might succeed as part of the bird emerged, but then it slipped back into the mud.

This was repeated several times but to no avail. The woman in the group ran back to her car and then went back to the mud hole with something. It was a pair of pants, which they put

Pulling ostrich from mudhole

at the base of the ostrich’s neck and then wrapped a leg over each wing.

Ostriches live in herds of 5 or more, so this one had clearly been abandoned. How long had he been stuck? A grown ostrich can weigh anywhere from 150 – 300 lbs. My friend and I debated leaving our vehicle to go help those who were struggling to free the ostrich. I had on sandals so wouldn’t be much help in the mud. I decided to offer Reiki to the situation for the highest outcome for all involved.

While my friend recorded the action with her camera, I closed my eyes and silently drew the symbols and repeated their names to help me go into a quiet space and focus on creating an energetic connection to the ostrich. I quieted my mind and tried to be open with no expectations, focusing just on the energy and not any desired outcome. I set the intention for the highest good for the ostrich (and the safety of the people) and let go.

After about 15 minutes, my friend shouted “They did it!” As I opened my eyes (and abruptly ended the Reiki session), I saw the stunned bird take her first steps. She took off running a bit awkwardly with her mud-covered wings weighing her down. She was free!

Free at Last!

Back at the camp later, we shared the story and chatted with others who had also been watching from their cars. While there was agreement that what the people did was heroic, there was debate about whether it was the right thing to do. Comments about survival of the fittest, interfering with the pristine order of nature, human intrusion leaving no part of the animal world untouched, breaking Park rules, and leaving nature alone were tossed about in judgment.

Unlike this analytical discussion, offering Reiki had provided me a direct energetic experience of the situation where there wasn’t a need to intellectualize it. I realized that there is no separation between “us” as people and the rest of nature – humans are a species of the animal kingdom, we are mammals, we are nature, we are all connected, we are all one.

The experience showed me how the Five Precepts interrelate with one another. Just for today….the individuals who rescued the ostrich weren’t concerned about the consequences of their action (getting muddy, breaking Park rules, being attacked by animals), they were focused on one thing – getting the ostrich out of the mud hole. There was no need for anger at their breaking the rules. There was no need to worry for their safety. They were being true to their way as individuals by showing compassion for themselves (by following their hearts) and the ostrich.

I was reminded of the integration of the Three Diamonds –earth, heaven and heart energy centers. The people were being flexible (not bounded by the imposed rules about staying in your car), yet firm (being practical and using a pair of pants to aid the rescue) and compassionate (taking action on the behalf of another being in need).

I appreciated the opportunity to observe the unique situation and to share Reiki during the rescue. But even more interesting to me is that my gratitude continues to grow as I reflect on the experience. Animals and Reiki – the gifts that keep on giving!

Year of the Dog

Year of the Dog

Year of the Dog

I’m a sucker for any movie with animals.   “Year of the Dog” is a mildly entertaining comedy starring Molly Shannon.  She plays a 40-something single woman whose dog is the center and love of her life.  (Thank you movie producers for not adding to the ‘crazy cat lady’ old maid stereotype!)

After her dog dies, she is bereft and forlorn.  She adopts a shelter dog, tries a relationship, becomes vegan, and then goes off the deep end and puts her job and sanity in jeopardy.

What I liked best about this movie was the ending….spoiler alert!  After she gets fired, gets help, gets back on track, and then gets rehired, she decides to do what she really wants and follows her bliss..  She writes a heartfelt email to her colleagues that she is going to follow her heart.  In the final scene, she’s on a bus with other protesters who are headed to an animal cruelty event.  She looks positively glowing and fulfilled!

This is a sweet movie that will give you a boost if you’re feeling stuck and you’re not  following your dreams.  Her journey of self-discovery reminds me of my Reiki practice.  It’s really all about learning who you are and reconnecting to your spiritual identity, your true nature, your original self.  It’s such a beautiful system – - the simplicity of it belies the profundity. All it takes is dedication to your daily practice to achieve your dreams!
